Capturing holiday family fun with a documentary-style photo session

Easter was coming up, and I was totally egg-cited (forgive me for the pun)! This is such a fun time of year and I think Easter is one of the best holidays for documentary-style photography. Between all the fun egg hunts and Easter egg decorating, there are tons of opportunities to capture family traditions and fun with your kids!

But I knew I’d be traveling over the Easter holiday, and I didn’t want to totally miss out! I was looking for folks that might want egg decorating photos a little early in the season, and the Cruxton family reached out. This would be the first time their boys were decorating Easter eggs, and they were excited to see the fun unfold!

Choosing a location for the Easter photo session

Since we were capturing a fun family tradition, it was a no-brainer to do the session at home in their family’s kitchen. And it worked perfectly! They had windows all around the table so there was really nice lighting even on this somewhat rainy spring day. There was also plenty of room for everyone to decorate eggs and have fun!

As a side note, most folks I talk to are a bit anxious when it comes to having sessions in their home! After all, it means inviting a new person in and people are often nervous that their home might not be the ideal, Instagram-perfect aesthetic for photos. But I LOVE doing in-home sessions – they are seriously some of my favorite ever! And your home is perfect as it is – It’s your HOME after all! I just think there is something really beautiful about capturing your family’s memories in the place where your kids grow up and you have many fond memories.

Decorating the Easter eggs

When I arrived, the boys were super excited to get started! Their mom and dad placed them around the kitchen table and brought out the decorating kits and hard-boiled eggs. Without further ado, the family got into it, dropping eggs in little dye buckets and watching the colors change!

And once the eggs were nice and colorful, it was time for paint, stickers and every parent’s favorite material … glitter!
