Unique Couples Photo Shoot Idea: Ice Cream Parlor

I think it’s safe to say most people LOVE ice cream. But have you thought about capturing your love of ice cream AND your love for each other with a couples photo session at your favorite local ice cream parlor?

The Idea: Ice Cream Parlor Couples Photos

I love to do creative, interactive sessions with couples, and had been sitting on the idea of an ice cream parlor session for quite a while. I finally put a call out in a local Facebook group, and Angie and Ivan were up for the challenge! We met in Stow, Ohio for their photo session at a local ice cream parlor, Handel’s (my personal fave, love their oree-dough flavor and also shoutout to them for giving us permission to do photos there!). Angie & Ivan ordered a scoop (they went for horchata and the oreo cheesecake flavors – yum!), and we got to capturing their ice cream date!

Documentary-Style Photography in Northeast Ohio

As a photographer, I focus on documentary-style photography (AKA, sessions that are based around an activity, so that you can have fun together while I focus on capturing your interactions and experience). An ice cream session is the perfect opportunity for this style to really shine. I love what sweet moments we were able to capture and how candid and fun the photos are.

Tips for Your Own Ice Cream Couples Photo Session

  1. Find a local parlor you love and reach out to get permission to do a session there.
  2. Though they probably have a lot of delicious items to choose from, I recommend getting classic waffle cones and ice cream for the photo session. There’s just something so nostalgic about it for photos!
  3. I would also recommend ordering a neutral colored flavor. For example, if you get something bright blue, it might stain the area around your mouths/be more noticeable on your clothes, which leads me to…
  4. Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting a little messy in! We did this session on a pretty hot day in the summer so everything got melty quickly. Luckily Angie and Ivan were wearing darker colors, so if anything dripped, it wasn’t noticeable/was easy to fix in post.
  5. Have fun together and enjoy every bit of that ice cream… And maybe buy a pint for later 😉
