An elopement at Ash Cave in Hocking Hills.

Why Elope in Ohio During the Winter?

  1. Snow: January and February are peak snow months in Ohio, so this is the perfect time to elope if you are wanting snowy, winter wonderland vibes for your elopement.
  2. Winter Activities: If you love winter activities (sledding, skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, exploring holiday light displays, etc.), then you’ll love a winter elopement in Ohio.
  3. Fewer Crowds: Popular elopement spots will often be more private and less traveled in the winter months. Ohio can get pretty chilly in the winter and folks might be deterred by snow on popular trails. If you’re not wanting to get up at dawn to get a place all to yourself, winter could be the next best alternative.
  4. Cozy, Romantic Atmosphere: Think fireplaces, twinkly lights, and cuddling up. If you want to work in cozy vibes to your elopement, winter is the perfect time.

The best spots are Brandywine Falls (again, I love a good frozen waterfall) and the Ledges.

More great waterfalls and scenic nature here. The best spot in winter is Lyons Falls!

Winter Elopement Tips & Considerations

Stay Warm

Dress in warm layers (think thermal underlayers, wool-lined leggings under dresses, faux fur wraps, warm jackets, insulated boots).

Bring hand warmers & thermoses with hot drinks.

Best Times for a Winter Elopement

Aim for afternoon and golden hour for the warmest lighting, and go for a weekday elopement for more privacy if you are considering popular locations.

Travel Considerations

Snow & ice can cause road closures or impassable conditions if you are planning to hike. Some trails may also close for ice if the conditions are too dangerous. Be sure to plan some backup activities for your elopement day.
