How to Have a Twilight-Inspired Elopement in Oregon

Eloping couple running on a deserted beach on the Oregon Coast.

Okay so, I know you read the Twilight books and watched the movies growing up, and now it’s a guilty pleasure rewatch that you’re lowkey still obsessed with. Me too. Well, did you know some scenes from Twilight were actually shot in Oregon? That makes it super easy for you to have your own Twilight-inspired elopement in Oregon.

Let’s get into planning…

Hey, I’m Desiree, an Oregon elopement photographer, who can help you plan and photograph your dream elopement.

Twilight-Inspired Elopement Locations in Oregon

Okay so first off, we need to talk about what locations in Oregon were used for filming so we know where to base your elopement. I’ll cover two major ones: Ecola State Park and Multnomah Falls.

Ecola State Park

Remember that part in the first movie where they all head to La Push? Well that was actually Ecola State Park on the Oregon Coast. This is a beautiful beach overlook location located just outside Cannon Beach.

Potential Locations to Combine with Ecola State Park

There is plenty to do in and around the park to fill an elopement day. You could spend a day hiking in the park or head to nearby Cannon Beach to explore the town and famous Haystack Rock area. There are also several hidden gem beaches and cliff areas nearby that I love exploring with eloping couples.

Multnomah Falls

Does the sight of this waterfall put you in the mood for some vampire baseball? It might be because you remember it from that scene in the first movie. This is a gorgeous waterfall located about two hours from the Oregon Coast and one of the main attractions in the Columbia River Gorge. It’s a gorgeous spot for an early morning elopement or you can find similar less popular waterfalls to explore nearby.

Potential Locations to Combine with Multnomah Falls

If you are basing a day around Multnomah Falls, you’re going to find out very quickly that you are in waterfall paradise and have an endless number of waterfalls and overlooks to explore during your elopement. Whether you are looking for strenuous hikes or more adventure-ish spots there’s a lot to do and see nearby. Portland is also just an hour away.

Choosing Your Elopement Location(s)

Since these locations are two hours apart, it becomes a bit tricky to do both in one go, you’ll lose quite a bit of time in driving. However, you have some options:

  1. Base your elopement in one location and choose between coast vs. waterfalls
  2. Combine both in a full-day elopement
  3. Opt for two days to really be able to dig in and explore each area

Which Season to Choose for the Best PNW Vibes?

If you’re aiming for moody fog and those quintessential PNW vibes from the movies and still be comfortable weather-wise, you’ll want to schedule your elopement for June – October on the Coast. For Columbia River Gorge, you’ll want somewhere in May and then September and October. Just keep in mind the coast and Columbia River Gorge both get busier in June, July, and August.

Activities for Your Twilight-Inspired Elopement

Here are some activities that will help round out your elopement:

  • Go find a meadow of wildflowers, lie down, and stare into each other’s souls
  • Stop at a local diner
  • Take a hike through old growth forests
  • Play a piano or have your first dance to Clair de Lune
  • Cuddle up in your rental cabin and look out the window at the PNW vibes
  • Hop on your partner’s back and demand they call you spider monkey while running through the forest

It’s the little things 🙂

Other Tips for Eloping in Oregon

It’s easier than you think to get married in Oregon and have the Twilight-inspired elopement of your dreams.

  • What do we need to know about permits? Many parks in Oregon actually don’t require you to get a permit for elopement photos or simple ceremonies, especially if it’s just the two of you. However, this is something I help the couples I work with figure out. I’ll be the one calling ahead to your locations so you don’t have to.
  • What do we need to know about getting legally married? You’ll need to get your marriage license in Oregon (it doesn’t matter which county), and wait 3 days before having your ceremony (some counties waive this if you pay an additional fee). For your ceremony, you’ll need an ordained officiant and two witnesses. Pretty simple overall!
