How to Plan a Hiking Elopement in Colorado (If You’re Not a Hiker)

When you look at photos of adventure elopements in epic locations, it can start to all feel a bit out of reach if you aren’t big into hiking. It’s easy to assume that these locations are all remote and difficult to access. However, that’s often not the case at all. You can still have an epic outdoorsy elopement in Colorado without the super strenuous trails, allowing you to explore at your comfort-level so you can stay focused on what matters. So if you aren’t big into hiking but still want to hike during your Colorado elopement (for the vibes and the views!), let’s go over how to do it!

As a Colorado elopement photographer, I help couples plan hiking elopements that suit their adventure level. I help with location and activity recommendations that ensure your comfort and help you stay present and connected with each other.

What’s a Hiking Elopement? Let’s Clear Some Things Up

Having a hiking elopement doesn’t automatically mean you have to trek 15 miles up and down a mountain. You can choose exactly the level of activity that suits the two of you. That could mean taking a short 1 mile hike around a pond, taking a quiet path to a scenic overlook, or going on a 4 mile hike to an isolated alpine lake. Hiking doesn’t automatically mean extreme adventure if you don’t want it to. Your elopement is 100% a choose-your-own-adventure-level kind of day.

Choose a Colorado Elopement Location That Matches Your Adventure Level

In the end, your comfort on your elopement day matters more than chasing the most dramatic views. And often, you can find equally dramatic views somewhere that is a good match for your adventure level if you stay flexible on your location.

When I location scout, I find a variety of trails and locations to suit all activity levels. I help you find everything from drive up locations to more strenuous hikes to off-the-beaten-path locations. As you’re finalizing your location(s), make sure you consider what distance, elevation gain, and terrain are suitable for your adventure level and what you will be wearing.

Wear Clothes and Shoes that Are Comfortable and Safe

If you are planning a hiking elopement, it’s important to wear appropriate shoes and clothing. It’s very difficult to hike in a dress that barely lets you take a step forward or in dress shoes that have no traction. Make sure you are choosing attire that allows plenty of movement and wear the hiking boots (it’s a whole aesthetic, believe me). Also, make sure you are packing layers that are weather appropriate – so wear the rain jacket, wear the puffy winter coat if needed. Stay warm and dry!

Another option is to change into your wedding attire or shoes once you reach your destination so you can be wearing exactly what you want, when you want.

Consider Hiking Poles

If you are going on a more strenuous hike, consider bringing things like hiking poles to help you along the way. These help take pressure off of your knees when you are going downhill and they can provide additional stability on sketchy surfaces.

Plan a Day That Moves at a Relaxed Pace

It’s important to give yourself time if you’re hiking during your elopement. You don’t want to feel exhausted, and you definitely don’t want to be rushing to a location and accidentally hurt yourself. Make sure you build in plenty of time to complete your hike at a relaxed pace, and don’t be afraid to take breaks for epic photos along the way. Afterall, your elopement is meant to be enjoyed!

Building intentional timelines is something I can help you with for your Colorado elopement.

Take Snack & Water Breaks

If you are hiking during your elopement day, it’s important that you bring plenty of water and snacks to keep you feeling good. Snacks like granola bars, trailmix, jerky, and other quick and healthy foods are my go-to’s. You can even pack a small picnic and make your snack break into something more epic!

Having a Good Experience is the Priority

Above all things on your elopement day, having a good experience is the priority. Making sure you plan intentionally around your desired activity level and setting yourself up for success by bringing the right gear/supplies will go a long way to ensuring you have the best elopement day possible.
I help couples with both Colorado elopement photography and thoughtful planning support. Let’s start planning your epic hiking elopement in the Colorado mountains!
