Your elopement timeline isn’t just about fitting everything in—it’s about creating a stress-free, intentional experience all about celebrating your love. As an elopement photographer, I’ve seen what works (and what can cause unnecessary stress), so here are my tips to help you craft a timeline that feels effortless, fun, and uniquely you.
I always recommend that you and your partner first discuss how much privacy you would each like during your elopement and then choose your timing and location(s) based on that.
Because let’s be real. Nothing is going to make an introvert more uncomfortable than being in front of a million other people while saying their vows or exploring a location in their wedding clothes. Make sure you are both okay with each activity and that you are thinking realistically about how many people may be around during that time of day.
Need help brainstorming private locations and the best timing for each spot? As your elopement photographer, I specialize in that! I am happy to provide timing and location recommendations based on your preferences.
There are some important things to think about when you are planning your ceremony time and location.
I’m a firm believer that sunrise and the first couple of hours after sunrise can be the most ideal time for your ceremony. If you’re a morning person, this will guarantee you are energized going into your ceremony and vows, ensure that you are still looking your absolute best after getting ready, and help you avoid crowds in popular locations. Sunrise is also frequently JUST AS GORGEOUS as sunset, we just don’t see it as often because we are asleep!
Bonus Tip: If you want a private ceremony, sunrise is the way to go!
Sunset and the hour leading up to it can also be an ideal time to have your ceremony if you are wanting epic sunset photos. This may also be a better time for anyone who is not an early riser! However, a drawback could be that you might feel less energized for your ceremony if you have had a long day leading up to it. If this is a concern, just make sure you don’t pack your day with too many strenuous activities ahead of your ceremony and that you are taking steps to keep yourself energized throughout the day (eating and hydrating properly!).
This may sound obvious, but it takes time to travel between locations or hike to different viewpoints.
My timeline planning template has a convenient spot for you to write in your expected travel time between locations so that you never forget this step! Learn about my photography and planning services here.
As you’re planning it might sometimes feel like there’s not a super natural stopping point for food, or it might feel like there aren’t a lot of options if you are in a remote area. But believe me, you do NOT want to go through an 8 hour elopement day with only a banana for sustenance. The point of eloping is to enjoy your day, not suffer through it!
So whether it’s stopping for a bite at your favorite fast food chain, having a meal at a local brewery, or packing a picnic, make sure you make time to eat something around your normal meal times.
Bonus Tip: Water is equally as important as food. Make sure you pack your reusable water bottle so you can stay happy and hydrated throughout the day!
Again, you don’t want to rush yourself on your elopement day or have unnecessary stress. Make sure you are being realistic about how long each activity will take and give yourself time to soak in the moment with your partner. Add some extra cushion time for travel and plan some intentional breaks.
