A Photographer’s Tips for Better Flower Field Photos

Have you ever visited a flower farm or a field of wildflowers and not been sure how to get the best photos of your adventure? Or worse, you walked away a little disappointed with your results?

Well look no further! I am a self-proclaimed flower field photo aficionado (also a professional photographer, but I like the ring of my new title better) and I’m dropping my top tips for capturing better photos!

1) Strategize Your Outfit

You want to make sure you stand out from the flowers and that your clothing choice complements them in a good way!

Safe colors for flower fields will always be whites and creams. Depending on the color of the flowers and if you are going for a more moody effect, black could also be a good choice.

If you want to get adventurous, consider looking at a color theory wheel as you decide what color to choose! Just google “color theory wheel” and find the color of the flowers first. Then consider wearing it’s complement – the color exactly opposite on the wheel! If the flowers are orange, that might mean wearing a shade of blue. If the flowers are purple, perhaps a shade of green!

Another bold move is to choose an outfit that matches the color of the flowers. This could leave you with a nice monochrome effect, but I’d recommend going with the darkest shade of the flowers so that you still stand out. So if we are talking lavender, then go for a deep, dark purple. Overall, it’s giving FASHION!

2) Get Low

Okay, now that the song is stuck in your head, be sure to sing it to yourself while you’re at the flower field as a reminder! While some standing photos are great, you’ll want to get low, or at least on the level of the flowers to capture their magnificence! It will also make the person being photographed appear more immersed in the flowers.

And we love a foreground MOMENT. Depending on your camera settings, you might get some nice blur on the flowers in the front for some added interest!

3) Get Close, Get Far

While it can be tempting to only get beautiful close-up portraits, get some that are more zoomed out as well! That way, you’ll be able to see the scale of the flower field (#Impressive), and it will add some variety to your photos.
